North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The North Wessex Downs are home to some very special wildlife sites, many designated as "Sites of Special Scientific Interest". A must for the wildlife enthusiast who likes to get off the beaten track. Within 5 minutes you can be viewing the Devizes White Horse, discovering Roundway Covert SSSI, the Iron Age Hill Fort of Oliver's Castle and the site of the 1643 Civil War Battle of Roundway Down.

Drew's Pond Nature Reserve >>

The Woods are of about 7.5 acres in extent and have been awarded local nature reserve status and have become a County Wild Life site. Throughout the year there are a succession of flowers;snowdrops, bluebells, anemones, marsh buttercups etc. and a good selection of birds. Geese and ducks can be usually seen on Drew's Pond itself.

Spye Park is a site of Special Scientific Interest and a "Woodland Welcome Wood" with permissive access to the heathland and mixed woodland site with heather and bracken with spruce and sporadic oak and birch with a mature woodland at the rear. Nearby is Chittoe Heath again, good for walking.

Peppercombe Wood is a strip of picturesque ancient woodland, full of wild-life,  on the edge of Urchfont and a four-minute walk from the centre of the village, which has it's own picturesque pond.

Not just about horses, the Barbury Show provides something for all the family;Festival of Food &Drink,  sheep racing, birds of prey, gun dogs, hounds, sheep dog displays and extensive Shopping Village.

Butterfly World and Farm Park>>

At Studley Grange Butterfly World and Farm Park you can visit the tropics in Wiltshire, rain or shine, summer or winter. You can walk among some of the most beautiful butterflies in the World, flying freely against a backdrop of tropical plants and skimming over fish-filled ponds. A three-day event, one of only six annual Concours Complet International Four Star events as Classified by the Federation Equestre Internationale which takes place in the park of Badminton House, the seat of the Duke of Beaufort in Gloucester.

Enjoy a day out at Bush Farm and see many other animals including elk, raccoons, guanaco, rhea, prairie dogs and chipmunks as well of course as the bison. Then wander around 30 acres of old oak woodlands with picnic &play areas. There is a display of Native American art and artifacts together with information about the history of bison.
