The great thing about this area is that there is something for everyone, no matter age or ability there are things to do and places to explore. These are just some of them, do ask if you have something you'd particularly like to do.

1) Walks >>

The area around Devizes is excellent walking country, click the link above and also see the tab on Nature, Animals and Wildlife. Within walking distance of Avalon Lodge is the Kennet and Avon Canal and the Cain Hill Locks, with 29 locks in 2.5 miles, and whose tow-path takes you through beautiful country and also past some welcoming canal-side pubs.

You can also walk on Roundway Down to see the White Horse close up and also tread the civil war battlefield.

2) Cycling >>

New in 2014 will be cycles that you can hire from us. Alternatively, cycle hire is available in Devizes at Roses &there are lots of good rides including the Kennet and Avon Cycle Route Number 4, which runs along the canal linking the Thames and the Bristol Channel, weaving through spectacular scenery on its way from Bath to Reading.

3) Geocaching >>

Depending how energetic you feel how about a stroll around some of central Wiltshire, finding most of the caches in the series and a few individual ones. If you've never tried this you could soon be addicted!

4) Shooting Range >>

The Wiltshire Shooting Centre has ranges that enable shooters to pay and shoot without hassle, complete with an electronic scoring system which is unique in the UK

5) Boating >>

If you enjoy mucking about on boats you have a choice of 1 man and 2 man kayaks and 3 man Canadian canoes or a self-drive canal boat for the day.

In addition, there are canal trips from the Wharf in Devizes.

6) Horse Riding >>

There are a number of horse riding centres locally and this is one of the largest in Wiltshire with 100 horses and ponies, all of which have been carefully selected to be safe and sensible. They vary from horses/ponies, cobs/thoroughbreds, and slow/fast. The centre is able to cater for every riding ability and requirement.

7) Hire of Vintage Classic Cars >>

Vintage Classics specialises in the Self Drive Hire of Classic cars. Choose from Jaguars E-Type or MKII (of Inspector Morse fame), Austin Healey, MGC Roadster, Alfa Romeo GTV, Alfa Romeo Spider and Audi Quattro turbo (as in the BBC?s Ashes to Ashes).

8) Fishing >>

The Devizes Angling Association controls approx 15 miles of prime coarse angling on the Kennet and Avon Canal,  a privately owned 6 acre Lake and a small stretch of river.

There is no closed season on the Canal or Lake.

9) Golfing >>

There are numerous golf courses within easy reach. North Wilts Golf Club welcomes visitors at all times on weekdays,  but asks you to ring the Pro Shop (01380 860330) in advance to check the course availability.

10) Clay Pigeon Shooting >>

The Swindon shooting ground is a terrific facility which caters for practice, tuition, parties and corporate events, and tailor the package to suit the needs of the players.

11) Thermae Spa, Bath >>

12) Avon Valley Railway >>

The Avon Valley Railway is more than just a train ride, offering a whole new experience for some or a nostalgic memory for others. It's a real treat for the whole family!

13) Somerset and Dorset Railway >>

Heritage railway, returning a section of passenger-carrying Somerset &Dorset Railway to working order. Restored station, re-laid track, demonstration trains running.

14) Royal International Air Tattoo >>

The world's largest military air show includes over two miles of static aircraft, interactive activities and ground exhibitions.
