Introduction

Avalon Lodge is set in a rural location less than a mile from Devizes and on the fringes of the village of Rowde in Wiltshire and offers high quality bed and breakfast accommodation.

Whilst we aim to meet the needs of all our guests, there are some features which may make access difficult for people with limited mobility or other disability.

Accessibility:

Pre-Arrivals

Avalon Lodge is a large detached house situated on the Devizes side of Rowde Village on the A342 Devizes to Chippenham road. Superb views of Roundway Downs, part of the North Wessex Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, are to the front with no immediate neighbouring properties overlooking and surrounded on three sides by open countryside.

Avalon Lodge (previously known as Embrea) was built in the 1930s but by 2007 was in a serious state of disrepair when it was purchased by Andrew and Janet Merritt who set about converting it into a warm, comfortable and welcoming bed and breakfast. The building was extended, re-roofed, insulated, double glazed and en-suite rooms were added.

However, the property does not have any down stairs guest rooms and whilst the bedrooms and bathrooms are ample they are not to mobility standard, which could make it difficult to access depending upon the extent of your mobility.

There is a lit blue and gold B&B sign outside the property and a bus stop is virtually adjacent the property, being serviced by Bus 33 and X33 between Devizes/Calne/Chippenham with the nearest Railway Station being at Chippenham. Devizes town centre is approximately 1 mile (25 minutes’ walk for an average person). Several taxi firms operate locally and details can be provided on request.

Our web site provides pictures of our guest accommodation where you can find details of our location. You can contact us by telephone, e-mail or post and you will see all the details under the “Contact” tab.

Arrivals and Car Parking

We have a large off-road parking area which is level and tarmac and lit by security lights at night. Assistance with luggage is available if required and secure cycle storage is available. Check in is normally between 4pm and 7pm and it would be appreciated if you could advise us if it is going to be later than 7pm. Earlier access to your room can be arranged on request. Departure is usually about 10.30am but again, later times can usually be arranged.

Avalon Lodge is carpeted throughout apart from the dining area, bathroom and en-suites which have vinyl flooring (for hygiene purposes). Food

We take pride in the food we serve and where possible buy from local suppliers and producers. This in turn helps sustain the local economy, conserve and sustain the landscape and keep the area thriving and attractive to visitors.

We have no problems in catering for those who prefer a non-meat or milk free diet! Advise us of your needs when booking and we shall ensure we can cater for you.

There may be nut products in the kitchen so this may be an issue for people with nut allergies.

Helping the Environment

Avalon Lodge sits on the edge of an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is surrounded by wonderful countryside. We aim to play our part in keeping the area like this for years to come and so support the aims of such schemes as the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS).

We are lucky to live in Wiltshire and this beautiful part of the South West of England and try to carry out our business in a way that minimises its effect upon the environment.

Local & Sustainable Schemes.

These schemes require practical evidence of our commitment and more and more ideas reflecting the schemes will be seen over the coming year so in addition to buying local produce and replacing light bulbs we have started harvesting the rainwater and having nesting boxes around the house.

You can play your part by not running water whilst cleaning your teeth, only requesting clean towels when necessary, etc. We partake in the recycle scheme so separate glass, cardboard etc. and have our own chickens.

Additional Information

All windows in Avalon Lodge are fitted UPVC double glazed to Building/Fire control specifications. All guest rooms and communal areas are fitted with mains linked (battery back-up) smoke/heat alarms. The building can be evacuated through the front door, the door from the dining room to the rear garden or the back door located through the kitchen.
